Etymology
The word "button" has a pretty interesting journey through language!
It comes to us from Middle English (around 1150-1500 AD), where it appeared as "boton" or "botoun." This Middle English word was borrowed from Old French, specifically "boton" (which is "bouton" in modern French).
Now, if you go even further back, that Old French "boton" came from an older French verb, "bouter" or "boter," which meant "to push" or "to thrust." This verb, in turn, is believed to have originated from a Germanic language root.
So, the very first meaning of "button" was likely linked to something that sticks out or buds. Think of a plant bud, which "pushes out" from a branch. This idea of something pushing or protruding is key to its original meaning.
When it first appeared in English, around the 14th century, "button" referred to a "knob or ball attached to another body," especially the kind used to fasten parts of a garment by being pushed through a slit or loop. So, the idea of a fastener for clothing was one of its earliest and most common uses.
