Etymology

The word "chromosome" is a combination of two ancient Greek words:

  • "Chroma", which means "color."

  • "Soma", which means "body."

So, literally, the word means "color body."

The term was coined in 1888 by the German anatomist Heinrich von Waldeyer-Hartz. He chose this name because when scientists were looking at cells under a microscope, they would use special colored dyes to make the tiny structures inside the cell visible. They noticed that these particular thread-like structures in the nucleus of the cell absorbed the color very intensely, much more than anything else. Because they looked like colored bodies inside the cell, he gave them the name "chromosomes."
