Etymology
The word "denim" has a fascinating origin that takes us back to a French city. It's a shortened version of the French phrase serge de Nîmes, which means "serge from Nîmes."
Serge was a type of strong twill fabric, and Nîmes is a city in southern France where this particular fabric was made. The "s" at the end of Nîmes isn't pronounced in French, so the name was often heard as serge de Nim. Over time, this was shortened even further in English to simply "denim."
The first known use of the word in English dates back to the late 1600s, where it referred to a heavy serge fabric. It wasn't until much later, around the mid-19th century in the United States, that the word became specifically associated with the coarse, colored cotton cloth we use for jeans and other work clothes today.

"Cut from the same cloth" - An idiom meaning two people are very similar in character or background. The "cloth" in this case can be a synonym for denim, especially when talking about a shared, rugged background.
