Etymology
The word Havarti gets its name from the Danish farm where it was first developed. In the mid-1800s, a Danish cheesemaker named Hanne Nielsen traveled around Europe to study cheesemaking techniques. When she returned, she experimented with different methods at her farm, called "Havarthigaard," located north of Copenhagen.
Through her work, she created a new type of semi-soft cheese that was different from others at the time. She called this new cheese "Havarti" after her farm. The name was a way of branding her unique creation and it stuck. The earliest known use of the word, therefore, is directly tied to her invention and the name of her farm, and the meaning has remained the same since: a specific kind of Danish cheese.
