Etymology
In simple terms, the word haven has always been about safety and shelter, and it started with sailors.
The word comes to us from Old English (hæfen) and was also heavily influenced by the Old Norse word höfn (the language of the Vikings). Both of these ancient words meant "harbor" or "port."
Its first known use in English dates back over 1,000 years to the Old English period (before 1050).
If you trace it back even further, the root of the word is likely related to the old Proto-Germanic word for "to have" or "to hold." This paints a very clear picture: a haven was quite literally a place that "holds" or "grasps" ships, keeping them safe from the dangers of the open sea.
Over time, we simply took that powerful idea of a safe holding place and applied it to everything else. It expanded from being just a port to being any place of safety, which is why today we can have a "safe haven" from a storm, a "wildlife haven," or even a "tax haven."
